Britain's Royal Academy of Art in the Late 1700s and Early 1800s

features artists in this elite English society. For more than a century, London's Royal Academy established the highest cultural standards in the English-speaking world. It trained young artists, mounted exhibitions to display works to fellow artists, critics, and collectors, and presented lectures and published catalogues to elevate public taste. The academy's members included Sir Joshua Reynolds, the portraitist Thomas Gainsborough, and the landscapist Richard Wilson. (National Gallery of Art)
