The Emergence of New Genres

exhibits six Italian paintings of the late 16th and early 17th centuries that show the establishment of landscape, still life, and genre paintings as subjects worthy of attention by the finest artists for the first time since antiquity. (Genre scenes are realistic depictions of ordinary people and everyday activities.) The site describes each painting in detail, and full-screen images can be downloaded. (National Gallery of Art)
