El Greco

was a Greek-born artist whose emotional style vividly expressed the passion of Counter-Reformation Spain. The exhibit showcases the most important collection of his work outside his adopted home of Spain. El Greco's "manneristic" style paintings featured elongated figures and strong contrasts of color and light. (National Gallery of Art)
