The Italian Cabinet Galleries

contains paintings and precious objects similar to those found in the private chambers or studies of Italian Renaissance princes, humanists or wealthy merchants. Most small finely detailed objects like paintings, bronzes, gems, coins, medals, rock crystal vessels, clocks, arms, ivory carvings and maiolica dishes, were meant to be handled and admired at close range. Many of the objects reflect the Renaissance fascination with classical Greece and Rome. (National Gallery of Art)
