Interesting Fact:

In 1976, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) landed Viking 1 and Viking 2 probes on the surface of the planet Mars with the express intent of searching for signs of life. While one of the "life detection" or microbiology experiments seemed to strongly suggest the presence of possible microbial life, a sensitive analytical device known as a gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) failed to detect the presence of any organic material in Martian soil.
