Gerry Mulligan Collection

presents audio excerpts, scores, photos, and information about the jazz composer and band leader who elevated the baritone sax to the status of a solo instrument and, with his piano-less quartet, helped establish the "West Coast jazz" sound. The autobiography section includes Mulligan's recollections of playing with Charlie Parker and the months he spent with Miles Davis and others at Gil Evans' apartment leading up to the "Birth of the Cool" album. Interesting Fact:

"Well, the one recording with Thelonious [Monk] came about by accident because he and I were pals and we visited back and forth. We only lived a few blocks away from each other and spent a lot of time together."
