The Miraculous Draught of Fishes

examines Jacopo Bassano's 1545 painting and compares it with other works that also depict the New Testament story in which Jesus calls Peter to become a disciple. Bassano's painting was one in a long line of "copies," or variations on a theme, a standard practice in the Renaissance. Here we see that certain elements—garments and figure groupings—were copied from another work but were altered to achieve greater dramatic effect. (National Gallery of Art)
